The Healing Factor in Counselling
The unconscious is often symbolised as the unseen aspects of an iceberg, suggesting that its secrets are deeply held and hard to reach. In fact, the unconscious is more aware of reality than we realise, especially when threat is close by. This suggests it is our consciousness that is actually submerged.
Studies indicate that the quality of the therapeutic relationship is the healing factor in counselling, rather than the approach used, and that about 80% of therapeutic interaction is unconscious.
PSYCH-BYTES WORKSHOP: THE HEALING FACTOR IN COUNSELLING
Date: 28th September 2019 | Saturday 1:00pm to 3:30pm
Cost: £50 (deposit not required but see booking policy for terms)
Venue: Toxteth Library, Windsor Street, Liverpool, L8 1XF (parking nearby)
This workshop examines the unconscious and what we understand about the term. As counsellors we tend to get overly engaged in the ‘story’ of our client’s experience. Consequently, the work often stays at a verbal level, when organismic impact (healing) requires involvement of the unconscious. I plan to offer some practical ways of engaging the unconscious in counselling work, enabling therapy to become more immediate and effective.
Booking policy: I don’t ask for a deposit, just a commitment that you will attend. You pay the full amount on or before the day of the workshop, either by cash or bank transfer. However, if you book a place and then cancel more than 48-hours before the workshop’s start time, you’ll be required to pay half the cost. And if you cancel within 48-hours of the workshop starting, or do not turn up on the day, you’ll be required to pay the full amount.
